Information Engineering Technology (pdf) students focus on networking and telecommunications as they investigate how technology is used to support organizations. Interested in becoming a teacher? Considering a second career in teaching? There is a critical need for teachers across the U.S. The UWF College of Professional Studies now offers a fully online B.A. degree program in Exceptional Student Education. This is a Florida Department of Education (DOE) and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) approved undergraduate degree program in Exceptional Student Education with ESOL and Reading Endorsements designed to prepare students who plan to teach children and youth especially those with exceptionalities. Many aspects of the program provide the student with opportunities to work with exceptional children. This degree is a fully online program.
Graduates of this specialization will be eligible for Florida DOE Certification in both ESE and Elementary Education with ESOL and Reading Endorsements. Teachers graduating from this program are classified as "highly qualified" based on the No Child Left Behind Act. Students must successfully complete the Florida Teacher Certification Exam in Exceptional Student Education, Elementary Education, General Knowledge, and Professional Education and participate in field experiences at their location in order to earn this degree and be certified in the state of Florida. Florida, with six of the 20 largest school districts in the U.S., has a tremendous need for teachers, including a critical need for the areas of middle school mathematics and science, reading, technology, and exceptional student education. Reciprocity with several other states means the Florida DOE certification is valuable throughout the nation. Please check with individual state boards of education for reciprocity.

Be part of a team! The Health Sciences team, that is. The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences is a two-year capstone degree program for persons holding AA, AS or AAS degrees from an accredited two-year college, or the equivalent. The BSHS trains students on issues impacting the design and deployment of health information systems and basic legal fundamentals of health care and public health. Students in this degree also study advances in health sciences research and technology, and learn to apply their knowledge of health economics to guide sound business analysis and decision making in health care. Students can pursue a track in one of eight concentration areas, with four of these tracks - Allied Health, Health Care Professional, Medical Information Technology, and Public Health - available completely online!
Allied Health track (pdf) professions are the allies in health care systems, the support professions distinct from the medical and nursing professions that work together to make the health care system function. At the Associate's level, allied health professionals are often the licensed professionals involved in the delivery of health services. Allied health professionals pursuing a Bachelor's degree (and beyond!) are those seeking additional responsibilities in leadership, communication, education, or research during their careers. The Allied Health track complements the BSHS core with courses covering diseases, drugs, and cross-cultural areas, such as end of life ethics and gerontology. Courses in public health, disaster management, and occupational safety and health in the health care environment round out this track to help students comprehend and address the complex and inter-related issues surrounding the communication and delivery of related health care services at local, regional, and national levels.
Health Care Administration
This is an exciting time for healthcare management. During the past few years many fields have seen upsets and laid off workers, but the healthcare industry has continued to add hundreds of thousands of employees to its workforce during this period. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is projecting 22% growth nationally from 2010 to 2020, well above the 14% average for all occupations. In fact, the BLS predicts healthcare will generate 3.2 million new jobs or more than any other industry by the year 2018. Unprecedented growth in the aging populations has fueled this great need for an increased number of healthcare professionals. As a result, more healthcare administrators will be needed to manage the practices and facilities that support these providers.
The name "healthcare administrator" is used by professionals who plan, coordinate, lead, and manage health service delivery in a variety of settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health agencies, outpatient facilities, physician offices, insurance companies and many other employment settings. The focus of the program is on gaining knowledge and developing practical skills in healthcare administration: business analysis, human resources, information systems, management, marketing, legal fundamentals, and policy.
Health Care Professional
The Health Care Professional track (pdf) in the BSHS was originally designed to address the difficulties encountered by junior college graduates with AAS degrees (e.g., dental assistants, radiology technicians, emergency medical technicians, medical technologists, etc.) in earning a BS degree. State-mandated courses required for certification and the core courses required for these specialties by junior colleges provide students earning this degree with a significant number of credits that do not count toward a BS degree. This track was designed in conjunction with Gulf Coast Community College (GCCC) to make the BS more easily attainable through adjustments in courses required of these students by GCCC and by adjustments in the transfer credits accepted for this track by UWF. Careful progress through an AAS degree at other junior colleges can also prepare students for this track. Students graduating from this concentration area receive training in professional writing, accounting, economic theory, principles of public policy, and end-of-life ethics. In addition, students examine issues related to medical disaster management and occupational safety and health in the health care environment.
Medical Information Technology
The Medical Information Technology track (pdf) is targeted to students currently working in health care with a two-year degree in a health care related field, possibly with no formal training in information technology (IT) and to those students holding a two-year degree related to any area of health information systems, or the equivalent. Students in this track have an interest in becoming more involved in IT-related projects or IT decision-making in their organizations. The track covers basic computer programming and database systems to prepare students to deploy new software tools to meet the needs of a clinical practice or administration. In addition, emerging trends in medical informatics are covered in the context of providing practical and up-to-date examples of technologies that have the potential to significantly improve communication, patient safety, and quality of care in health care and/or public health arenas.
Public health is defined as "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals." In contrast to the medical paradigm of health care, public health focuses on health promotion and disease and injury prevention. Because of this holistic, preventative approach, public health plays a crucial role in emergency readiness and response.
The American public health system relies on a cadre of well-trained public health professionals. Over the past ten years, incidents such as the 2009 H1N1 Swine Flu epidemic, the 2003 SARS outbreak, and the 2001 bio-terrorist attacks have heightened awareness of the need for an effective and responsive public health system (Public Health Workforce Study, 2005). Moreover, as the emphasis in health care moves from disease treatment to disease prevention, more public health workers will be needed.
Exacerbating this, nearly a quarter of the current public health workforce is eligible to retire in 2012. Current industry estimates indicate that 250,000 more workers will be needed in this field by 2020. A 2008 report from the Association of Schools of Public Health advises that a 300 percent increase in public health graduates is necessary to keep up with demand, (Confronting the Public Health Workforce Crisis, 2008).
In recognition of the growing demand for well-educated public health workers, UWF's School of Allied Health and Life Sciences created the B.S. in Health Sciences specialization in Public Health offered entirely online. This specialization was created to prepare and pipeline students into our CEPH-accredited Master's in Public Health Program. The curriculum has been designed to prepare students for careers in public health, to master field specific competencies, and to educate them broadly in the fields of health. Students are encouraged to participate in 3-semester long Co-ops with their local public health departments.
The Networking and Telecommunications Specialization (pdf) is an intensive professional development program for higher order skills in the design, implementation, and maintenance of network and telecommunications systems for training and education organizations. It provides an alternative path to the short term, time-sensitive, narrowly focused, application-specific skills training provided by commercial training concerns or community colleges in the form of a lengthier, more generalized, broad-ranging course of study. The program is highly technical without being too narrowly focused, and provides additional emphasis on developing strategies for the application of the technologies in innovative ways. The Maritime Studies Program (pdf) is designed to familiarize students with the dynamic cultural and natural resources of the maritime environment. Students gain the necessary knowledge and expertise to enable them to participate and contribute to our growing understanding and management of the maritime environment. Flexibility is the hallmark of UWF's Maritime Studies Program where you can tailor your degree program to your individual interests. Core courses provide an overview of the main areas of study. The University of West Florida's RN-BSN nursing program (pdf) prepares students to become clinical generalists who are leaders, managers, and lifelong learners. The role of the nurse is one that requires critical thinking, communication, independent judgment and familiarity with social, political, cultural, ethical and economic issues that affect health care and the nursing professional. Students learn to integrate research findings into nursing practice. This 100% online program track is open to RNs who hold current licensure (via ASN or diploma) and an associate degree from a junior or community college, or completed the General Studies curriculum. The UWF Nursing program is accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Students who elect to pursue a degree in Workforce and Program Development (pdf) (formerly Career and Technical Studies, B.S.) graduate with multiple employment opportunities. Students enrolled in the program develop valuable experience with faculty members who have “real world” experience and associations within the Career and Technical field. Upon completion of the requirements for the CTE Workforce and Program Development degree, students will be able to plan, supervise, conduct and evaluate training programs in business, industry, and government. Students who choose to pursue teacher certification are required to complete the Professional Education Minor (Professional Training Option - PTO) within the School of Education. Students may use these courses as their electives within the Workforce degree. Those who complete the PTO will be eligible for temporary certification to teach in middle schools, high schools, and Career and Technical Education centers.
