The University of West Florida Campus is located in beautiful Pensacola, Florida. Nearby, NAS Pensacola is the cradle of naval aviation and home to the famed Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team. Forty miles east in Ft. Walton Beach, Fl., the U.S. Air Force oversees Hurlburt Field and Eglin AFB. Florida’s Emerald Coast has always maintained strong ties to the military community and UWF is no exception.

In addition to the academic programs listed on this site, the Online Campus provides educational support to the DOD – Worldwide through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES). UWF actively participates in the DANTES Troops-To-Teachers and Spouse-To-Teachers programs. Additionally, all military (active, reserve, National Guard) personnel are eligible to register for courses delivered using a PDA (personal digital assistant). Visit the Pocket Campus website for details if you are interested in taking courses on a PDA. Tuition Waivers

UWF makes it easy and affordable for military personnel and their family members to continue their online college programs wherever they are stationed. The UWF out-of-state fee waiver covers the out-of-state portion of assessed tuition and fees for students enrolled in our fully online programs or certificates. This waiver makes tuition and fees only slightly higher than Florida resident tuition even though students may live outside the state. Of course, members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty stationed in Florida and their spouse and dependents already qualify for in-state, Florida resident tuition.

UWF offers special tuition waivers for military personnel:

Purple Heart Recipients

Senate Bill 122 passed July 1, 2006. The law states that state universities and community colleges will waive tuition for recipients of the Purple Heart or other combat decoration superior in precedence who:

1. are enrolled as a full-time, part-time or summer-school student in an undergraduate program that terminates in a degree or certificate;
2. are currently, and were at the time of the military action that resulted in award of the Purple Heart or other combat decoration superior in precedence, a resident of this state; and
3. submit to the state university or the community college the DD-214 form issued at the time of separation from service as documentation that the student has received a Purple Heart or another combat decoration superior in precedence.

Florida National Guard

Certain members of the active duty Florida National Guard may be exempt from the payment of one-half of the cost of tuition and fees for courses on a space-available basis only. Students using this waiver may not register for courses subject to the waiver until the last day of registration.

Certain members of the Florida National Guard may qualify for that portion of fees not otherwise waived to be paid directly by the Florida Department of Military Affairs when authorized by that agency. An approved authorization billing must be presented to the Cashier’s Office on the main campus or Fort Walton Beach Campus by the close of the drop/add fee payment period. Authorization presented after that day will be subject to the assessment of the late payment fee.

Tuition Deferrals

UWF also allows veterans to defer payment of tuition and fees. Deferral eligibility is guaranteed to students receiving veteran’s educational assistance benefits from federal or state assistance programs, where such aid is delayed in transmission to the student through circumstances beyond the control of the student. Veterans and other eligible students receiving benefits under Chapters 30, 32, 35, and 1606, U.S.C., will be entitled to one deferment each academic year. An additional deferment will be granted each time there is a delay in the receipt of benefits. Registered students can submit their deferral requests online through ARGUS or can contact the UWF Veterans Service Office at: 800.226.1050.

Withdrawals

In the case of a student called to active duty military service or change of orders due to military conflict within the semester, the student must contact the Office of the Registrar and provide a copy of military orders immediately. Students will have the option of withdrawing with a complete refund, withdrawal with a grade of “W”, or accepting incomplete grades to allow the student to complete the courses at a later date. Students will be asked to notify the University of their desired option.
The transcripts of students who have contacted the Office of the Registrar as stated above and are subsequently withdrawn, awarded refunds, or given incomplete grades will be annotated with appropriate statement indicating action taken was due to military active duty service.
